Your Pregnancy Week by Week: Week 5

Baby Week 5 development

Baby Development

The week 5 edition:

Your baby is as tiny as an orange seed with a tail! It’s about 0.3cm in size. It is, in fact, a tiny tadpole, floating around in your uterus! The placenta should grow fully by the end of the first trimester. In the meantime, the neural tube continues developing. It’ll soon become the baby’s spinal cord.

Here is an extensive list of everything your baby is up to this week:

  • The middle layer of cells or the mesoderm will become the heart.
  • The ectoderm or the outer layer forms the neural tube which produces the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
  • Endoderm, the inner layer becomes the urinary tract, lungs and intestine.
  • The five divisions have been made in the baby’s brain.
  • Your Baby’s skeleton is starting to form.
  • Its arm and leg buds have sprouted.

Track your growth at week 5:

Your pregnancy hormones have started to kick in! The levels of your pregnancy announcer hormone aka HCG, are soaring high enough for you to test positive in a home pregnancy test. Do you remember the last time you had your period, make a note of it and a list of all your medications. The due date you may calculate is only an estimate, knowing that less than 5% of babies are born on their due dates. Now is the time you can share this news with your friends and family!

Here is a list of symptoms you may see this week:

  • A lot of chemical and metabolic changes are taking place in your body as the pregnancy hormones kick in!
  • Nausea and morning sickness will be fairly rampant. It’s a sign of hunger, eat through the day in little bites.
  • If you feel tired and fatigued, rest up . Right now is the time when you afford to squeeze in a good night’s sleep.
  • The thought of some foods make you feel icky, this is the onset of food aversions.
  • Your breasts grow tender and swollen.
  • You may be salivating excessively. Don’t be embarrassed, chew on a sugar-less gum!
